How to Write a Grant Cover Letter

Have you ever been confused while writing a cover letter for a grant application? Each application will have different requirements for what you might include in the cover letter, but here is an example I have made for an organization applying for overhead funds.

Dear Contact Person at the Foundation,

On behalf of (Organization Name), I would like to thank you for the (Foundation’s Name) Foundation’s generous support of the community. We also thank you for the opportunity to apply for the 2016 round of the (Grant Opportunity).

As our application will explain, at (Organization’s Name) we strive to (what your organization does) enable youth from low-income families through empowerment, enrichment, and extended academic success. The at-risk youth we serve are facing challenges on all sides including their family relationships, poor health, low academic achievement, and various other issues that are related to low-income households.

To combat these issues our organization and staff devote their time, skills, and resources to help our community’s youth. In order to complete our mission successfully, (Organization’s Name) must meet its organizational operating budget of $400,000. We believe that a strong operational budget will allow our organization to expand in order to impact more youth. Additionally we believe effective leadership is the strongest factor in nonprofit sustainability; Our organization will not sustain its operations without retaining the highly qualified and talented employees it has, which requires fair compensation.

We are grateful to your foundation for joining in this cause and for providing much needed resources for many organizations in the community. Once again, we are grateful for this opportunity and we look forward to working closely with the foundation in the coming months. We understand the timeline and requirements and look forward to our meetings together. If you should have any questions or require further information, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

(Executive Director)
